  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

My relationship with Spanish began during my MBA, when Spanish was one of my language subjects. It was only an introductory course, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. After my MBA, I worked in marketing, and after my second job I decided to take a sabbatical and return to Spanish simply because I wanted to learn it properly.

That decision changed the direction of my life. Learning Spanish felt almost magical—I found myself genuinely enjoying studying again. One level led naturally to another, and before I knew it, I had progressed all the way to C1. After completing it, I began teaching, and discovered that I loved that just as much. More than eight years later, Spanish has brought me the opportunity to work with school students, adults and professionals from very different backgrounds, and it has been an incredibly rewarding journey.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

What I enjoy most about teaching is the relationship that develops with my students, especially school students whom I often teach for several years.

When you meet someone every week over such a long period, you don't only watch their Spanish improve—you watch them grow up. You see their confidence change, their interests evolve and their personality develop.

I therefore make space in my classes to talk to my students, listen to what is happening in their lives and build a relationship in which they feel comfortable being themselves. Many of my students describe me as the “fun Spanish teacher” they can talk to, and that trust is one of the parts of teaching I value most.
  • How does your work help society?

Of course, my role is to teach Spanish, but especially with younger students, I feel that education goes beyond the subject itself.

A teacher or coach can sometimes become another trusted adult in a student's life. Over the years, students naturally talk to me about school, their goals, things they are excited about and sometimes things they are struggling with. I enjoy listening, encouraging them and helping them think through situations while remaining their teacher and mentor.

If a student leaves my classes not only speaking better Spanish, but also a little more confident, curious and comfortable expressing themselves, I feel my work has achieved something meaningful.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

I don't think I have one individual role model. I think instead of the wonderful teachers I encountered during my own journey with Spanish, particularly while studying at Instituto Cervantes.

The teachers I remember most were those who made learning enjoyable while still taking the language seriously. They could explain something difficult without making the student feel that it was difficult.

That is something I try to bring to my own classes. I want students to learn properly and be challenged, but I also want them to look forward to the class. For me, good teaching is a balance of knowledge, clarity, patience, humour and understanding the person you are teaching.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Outside teaching, I love travelling, practising yoga and playing Mahjong.

I also genuinely enjoy creating content for my Instagram page, Spanish with Sugandha. It gives me a completely different creative outlet—thinking of interesting ways to explain Spanish, designing content and finding everyday language that learners will actually remember.

Travelling is another important interest because I enjoy experiencing different places, food and cultures. I think that curiosity naturally connects with my love of languages too, although thankfully not every hobby of mine eventually becomes a Spanish lesson!
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

One of the things that humbles me most is what happens after years of teaching the same student.

I have had students whom I first met when they were quite young, watched them move through different grades and eventually graduate from school. Some of my former students have gone on to universities such as Johns Hopkins and Babson, and of course I feel incredibly proud watching where life takes them.

But what means even more to me is when they still stay in touch. At some point, the relationship becomes bigger than the weekly Spanish class. Knowing that a student who no longer needs Spanish lessons still wants to tell me what is happening in their life is probably one of the loveliest rewards teaching has given me.
